Share The End

Your song, "Share the End," sent chills down my spine the first time I heard it, so many years ago. For some reason, the lyrics were going through my head this week as the world seems to be crashing down around us. I went back and played the song again this morning and it made me weep. It seems to be coming true.

I beg you to re-release this song to make everyone, everywhere, stop and think about the road we're heading down. Please sing this song to anyone who'll listen. Thank you, Debra Lo Guercio - A longtime fan from Winters, CA

That's a great idea. Maybe Jodie would put it up on the website. It's much too complicated to play on the piano. I've just recently been learning "Coming Around Again" again. That bridge is NOT easy. I'm not very good at repeating my enchanting little chords that I believe to be so memorable at the time of writing.

"Share the End" has that blood curdling scream. Which by the way let out an anger that had lasted more or less a life time up until then. Love Carly - 2/22/03

SHARE THE END (Carly Simon/Jacob Brackman) From the "Anticipation" CD.

Here come the priests, each one wailing and bemoaning
Lordy, they got their heads bowed down
Here come the madmen, they're too excited for atoning:
"Burn the mosque," they're shouting, "Burn it down!"

Save me a place, surrounded with friendly faces
All of us have gathered here to share the end
To watch the world go up in flames

Please, Lord we're not ready
Give us a day
Give us an hour

Here come the kings, let's dispense with their apologizing
Just bring on the acrobats and clowns
Here comes the rumble, hang on for universal dying
Please ignore the baying of the hounds

Save me a place, surrounded with friendly faces
All of us have gathered here to share the end
To watch the world go up in flames

Please, Lord we're not ready
Give us some time to work things out...
Please, Lord we're not ready
Give us a day
Give us an hour...
Please, Lord we're not ready
Give us some time to work things out...
Please, Lord we're not ready
Give us a day
Give us an hour...

Eau De Lime

Hi there,

Playing Possum is my favorite album of yours, and 'Look Me In The Eyes' is a beautiful track. The song has some of the most beautiful words I've ever heard.

I wanted to ask, what or who inspired the wonderful lyrics.."Won't you give me all your limes and I will give you a reason, I will rub them on my body and smell like the West Indies"?

Thanks for giving me the chance to ask a question. Fondest wishes and all the best. Nia - North Wales, UK

I had had a boyfriend named Rodney. Not really a boyfriend boyfriend, but a crush. A long time ago. Way before James so let's not start any tortured gossip, but he wore a certain cologne that was basically lime juice as far as I could tell. He smelled so much like the West Indies that he stood timeless under an exotic palm in Tortola, half in and half out of the water. Simply that. Intoxicating. Love Carly - 2/18/03

MUSE ( No Nukes )

Hi Carly,

I was watching Jackson Browne's "Going Home" DVD over the weekend, and Bonnie Raitt was reminiscing about the MUSE concerts of 1979. She mentioned that the original idea for doing the benefit arose out of a discussion between you, James Taylor and John Hall after a concert of hers in NY. Do you have any special memories of that particular meeting ? Thanks, and best wishes for a great 2003. Bob - Warren, RI

We did a press conference that night at Bonnie's concert. About nuclear energy and we had sung John Hall's great song: "Power". John was the force. He was the real guy that got the idea of "No Nukes" rolling. Others were happy to follow. Even rapacious and eager and then there were others who called it 'their own idea'.

But, I can pretty much tell you it was John's baby. Bonnie was right there with him and James and myself eager supporters. Jackson is always an amazing force too. In so many ways. Love Carly - 2/10/03

The laugh on Actress

Dear Carly,

Who's wondrous laugh is that at the end ot the song "Actress"? It makes you laugh too and leaves you with a good feeling in your soul. Is it your daughter Sally?

Your Anthology is wonderful as well as your Christmas Album.
Keep on Keeping on! Donna Dragan - Cheshire,CT

It's one of the Rankin Sisters. I think, Raylene. It sounds like Sally. But a tinkly laugh is a joy whenever it is natural and unstoppable.

I'm going to try to re-release that album, (The Bedroom Tapes) as I have ownership of it again. I'm excited about the prospect, as it is my favorite of my self-penned albums. Love Carly - 2/2/03
