Music in animated film
Dear Carly, My question is about a very short animated film that I saw on one of the movie channels. It was at least six months to a year ago, maybe longer. It was a wistful piece about a dog waiting for his master to return home. The audio was a wonderful rendition of an old standard that I believe you sang. Am I right?
What was the song? I am haunted by that little animated piece. I was thinking of it again as a beloved dog of mine recently passed. I have always been a huge fan and hope you are well. Best wishes, Melissa Brook - Lubbock/Texas
Dear Melissa,
I'm not familiar with the animated film, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was me. I am often the last to know.
Anyway, I hope it was me. Love, Carly - 2/13/06
Queen Mary 2 DVD
Hi Carly, I just wanted to let you know that I just spent the most fabulous 90 minutes or so watching and listening to your DVD Moonlight Serenade on the Queen Mary 2. Oh my, what a delightful way to pass the time!!! I expected to hear the old standards that had been made popular back in the day, but what a surprise it was to also get to hear some of your own classics. And, then when I clicked on the bonus sections, I was even more pleased to hear you singing more of your hits in such a casual setting. And then, wow, to hear you sing Love Of My Life directly to Sally--yikes, it was pure heaven!
Oh, since I must ask a question: do you ever get tired of honoring requests for the singing of your classic hits? I sure hope not because I, for one, never get tired of listening. Best of luck with your new CD and DVD. Bette Shreiber - Keyport,NJ
Dear Bette, Thank you so much for your compliments on the DVD. I must say it was an utterly enjoyable thing to do. The only downside was that I had my hair streaked and the first time it was too orange, so someone else tried to fix it and it all fell out and off. I am now living with half a head of hair and it's a mousy brown and short.
Yes, I do like to take requests as long as I still know the song! Love, Carly - 2/9/06
Uncle Peter's music during the concert
Carly, I was at your concert in Ann Arbor, and I was blown away!!! In fact, I was one of the first people up near the stage and could KICK myself for not shaking your hand.... too intimidated I guess. Anyway, you really ROCKED the house. Carly, my question is about the music of your Uncle Peter that you played before the concert. It sounded so familiar. Was he part of the This is My Life soundtrack? "Back the Way" reminds me of his sound. Thanks again for an unforgettable show. Mary Groth - Bloomfield Hills, MI
Dear Mary,
Good for you. It wasn't exactly the same music, but it was my tip of the hat. In fact, a pretty good imitation of Uncle Peter. On the CD the last cut is actually CALLED "Uncle Peter".
I love him so much. Loved him, love him, what's the difference? He could dance and sing like nobody I have ever known. Thanks for asking. Love, Carly - 2/5/06
What's It Like To Be Up "There"
(Note: Carly has been away from her computer and is now answering letters written over the course of the last few months)
Dearest Carly, Last night I experienced one of the 10 best days of my life: Carly Simon in concert at the Borgata! It was thrilling, beautiful and perfect, better than how I had imagined it! Having Ben and Sally there was like a added gift you gave us all. There is, however, one particular thing that has stuck with me. After singing "Private" it was clear you were emotionally and mentally moved by the moment and you asked the crowd, "Do you know what it's like to be up here? To bare your soul to hundreds of strangers?" And you couldn't really find the words to relate to us what you were feeling. But I lay in bed this morning thinking about that and I just want to tell you this. You are safe. It may feel like we are strangers, and in a way we are, but we are also a sea of people who filled a room for you and and you alone. Together, as one, we enveloped you in admiration and love. There was nothing you could have done or performed that could have changed that. There is no safer place for you to swim and frolic and play, for all we want is to spend time loving, appreciating and listening to you. Baring your soul to us is why we love you and we will continue to flow into venues as long as you invite us to come and be with you. Please never ever forget that!
I do have one small question: the idea of having a couch on the stage was ingenious! It was as if you had invited us into your sitting room, giving us a feeling of easiness and comfort, like home! I was wondering, whose idea was that and is that a couch from your home? Thank you for coming to New Jersey and please Carly, don't stay away too long!
Love, Sharon Kohutanycz - Kendall Park, NJ
Dear Sharon,
What a fantastic and darling and loving letter. Thank you. "Private" is one of the most wrenching song for me to sing. For many reasons. I don't know what I said afterwards, but I think if I said anything it was probably in the vulnerable area. I thank you for listening to what was going on in my psyche. You make me want to go on stage right away!
I have always travelled, when I do, with a couch. Seems reasonable, don't you think? Well - on any tour anyway. My love to you. Carly - 2/2/06
