Two Little Sisters

Ms. Simon,

I heard, for the first time, your song "Two Little Sisters", at the end of a movie today. I would like to thank you for that song. My only sister died of a rare form of Leukemia in 2004. I took care of her for nine months before she left me, and I have had a difficult time without her. She was my best friend, my champion, my defender, and my heart.

I have written poems all my life and since she became ill, I seem to have lost that thing inside me that allowed me to create. Your song is the only song that touched me in such a profound way of how it was between us. I will always love and miss her, and I would not trade those nine months of being her caregiver for anything in the world...but those nine months have also become my enemy because they haunt me with memories and all the pain she suffered. She is at peace now, and for the first time since her death, a song has literally lifted me out of some of the darkness. Thank you. Thank you so much for touching my heart!

Can I please ask what your inspiration for that song was?

God Bless you and yours,
Dellayne Langston - Tonkawa, OK

Dear Dellayne,

The song was written (and I was hired to write it for) Marvin's Room, the movie with Meryl Streep and Diane Keaton. If you haven't seen it, you might think about watching it. It will undoubtedly stir up some Ghosts, but you have them anyway and a good cry is always a cleansing thing. Sometimes I feel things and can access them better when I discover them second hand. And....of course I thought about my dear sisters when I wrote it. I'll come home to you, you'll come home to me....etc.

Thank you for your letter. With love, Carly - 5/8/05
