I Forget
Dear Carly,
I was listening to "The Bedroom Tapes" this afternoon, and wanted to ask you about your song "I Forget". I understand you wrote it about your experience with depression. As someone who has suffered from chronic depression for ten years and hasn't been able to fully eradicate it, it knocked me over how well you captured in song what this illness truly feels like ....Since depression can totally wipe out one's energy and motivation (sometimes it takes me an hour to gather up the energy to empty the dishwasher or walk out to the mailbox) I'm amazed at your ability to accomplish turning out such a work of art during that period of your life.
People generally don't speak personally about affective disorders too much -- at least with any ease-- and although I would never wish this illness upon anyone, it was very, very comforting to hear someone speak of it so poignantly, eloquently, and beautifully. Was it hard for you to release such an incredibly personal song? I have all your music, and given how much comfort this song has given me, which of your other songs can you specifically direct me to that are of similar essence? The heart-felt emotions of your songs is what I love most about them. Love, Adrienne
I like it by far the best when I think I can really get to someone. When something I'm saying/singing reaches right inside the breast pocket and removes a ltttle layer of protective sealant. The only revelant conversations you have with people where you really believe you have moved you and she or you and him closer toward those longer more trustworthy looks in the eyes. The parting of the lips. The unphoney truths that surprise both of you. They are the moments in life I need a lot more of. Love, Carly - 12/22/02

Thanks, Scott - Birmingham, Alabama
